High-Flying AirBnB Executive Cherishes Concordia’s Iconic Grounds and Lifelong Lessons

High-powered executive Susan Wheeldon attributes some of her business success to the lessons she learnt many years ago at Toowoomba’s Â鶹´«Ã½. The Country Manager of Airbnb in Australia and New Zealand and a non-executive director on several ASX-listed boards, Susan travels the world but still finds time to come back to Toowoomba regularly to where her school life all began. “My parents and one brother still live in Toowoomba, so I still visit Toowoomba regularly and I have such happy memories of my time at Concordia,†Susan said. “I went to Concordia for 12 years as a day student from 1985, although I wanted to be a boarder so I could get hot lunches,†she said.

Students help create ‘magic’ in Aged Care

An unlikely alliance between a group of Toowoomba high school students and local aged care residents is providing benefits to both age groups. The initiative between Â鶹´«Ã½ and Lutheran Services Salem Aged Care started a student learning program a year ago has bridged the generation gap and led to genuine connections between all involved.

Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s Oktoberfest is back!

Following the success of last year’s event, Concordia will stage a bigger, better Oktoberfest celebration on the historic grounds of the Senior College on Saturday, October 19 from 4pm to 8pm. Oktoberfest spokesperson and Parent Connect president, Alice Prince, said anyone with an interest in the Germanic culture and fun should attend the community-centred event at the College’s Stephen Street campus. “We learnt a lot from last year’s event, and we will be returning with a greater array of traditional German activities including a wurst competition with many of our entrants using family recipes that have been in use for more than 100 years,†Mrs Prince said.

From shooting hoops in a country Queensland town to a gold medal-winning performance at the International Youth Basketball Championships, Â鶹´«Ã½ boarder Marcus Franklin is on a path to basketball stardom. The event, held in Pattaya City, Thailand, brought together 67 teams from 13 countries, and Marcus’ team from the Own the Rock Academy emerged victorious in their division after a 30-point win against a team from Hong Kong in the final.

Paris Olympics inspires young Concordia student to reach for the stars

With the Paris Olympics wrapping up this week, a young Â鶹´«Ã½ student has her sights firmly fixed on wearing the green and gold in the future. Fourteen-year-old Lisa Richards placed second in the 100 and 200 metres backstroke at the Australian Schools National Swimming Championship this year emulating her hero Kaylee McKeown who swam the same program in 2016.

Former Queensland Businesswoman of the Year and highly credentialled educator Jill Lange-Mohr credits the solid foundation she gained at Â鶹´«Ã½ for paving the way for her success in life. Jill, who was a Concordian between 1972 and 1976 when she finished Year 12, spent 44 years working as an educator before receiving an Order of Australia (OAM) in 2020 for her services and contribution to education.

Toowoomba’s award-winning mezzo-soprano Hayley Sugars is in a sweet patch of her career with a month of headline performances throughout Queensland. Hayley shone at the inaugural Brisbane Bel Canto Festival where she sang opposite superstar soprano Jessica Pratt, who performed her internationally renowned performance of Lucia di Lammermoor to Brisbane audiences. Hayley played the role of Alisa in the tragic tale of romantic obsession which wowed crowds over two nights in the Queensland Performing Arts Complex (QPAC).

Learning assistant David Heuschele has worn out a few sets of shoes in his time at the Â鶹´«Ã½. David first walked the halls of the historic school in 1977 when he started as a boarder and would tread the boards for the next four years before graduating. He then came back to the school as teacher’s assistant and clocked up more than 21 years at the school until retiring this week.

Toowoomba carnival season to extend into next month with Oktoberfest!

The College teaches German as a subject and hopes the new festival will enhance the connection for students to gain a better understanding of the Germanic culture.
